Battles Resume in Western Donetsk

Ukrainian officials said Russian-backed separatists launched an attack on government-controlled territories in Marinka early on June 3, violating a ceasefire agreement that has been in place since February.

The pro-Russian Donetsk News Agency, quoting the defense minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Eduard Basurin, said fighting had occurred around Marinka, west of Donetsk city, but Ukrainian forces had also launched an attack on the Petrovsky and Kirov regions of Donetsk.

A news page for the Donetsk People’s Republic said Marinka had been “liberated” as a result of a “massive strike” from separatist forces.
