Police Disperse 'You Stink' Protesters, Chasing Them From Square

Thousands of people from across Lebanon gathered in central Beirut on Saturday, August 29, for the latest “You Stink” rally to be held in the capital, this time aimed against politicians.

Violent clashes broke out last weekend between security forces and protesters, who are demanding the government resolve a garbage crisis in the city triggered by the July closure of Lebanon’s biggest landfill. Demonstrators say that the trash issue is emblematic of endemic corruption and poor public services in the nation.

This footage shows police dispersing the protest, chasing demonstrators from Beirut’s Riad al-Solh Square, next to the seat of the government. The protest, which began at 6pm, was expected to draw some 50,000 people, according to reports. Credit: Twitter/Hasan Esen
