Love Locks Removed From Pont Des Arts

Workers removed love locks from the Pont des Arts in Paris on June 1. Hundreds and thousands of padlocks inscribed with lovers’ names have been hung along the bridge. Tradition is that the key to the lock is then thrown in the river after the lock is affixed to the bridge.

City officials had said the removal of the locks was important to preserve the historic bridge, The New York Times reported. There also was concern for safety in that the weight of the locks could bring a portion of the bridge crashing into the river as a boat passed under it.
