Tens of thousands of workers marched through Dublin and seven other Irish cities in protest against government plans to impose an emergency budget and rein in the nation's soaring deficit. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the umbrella body for unions representing a third of Ireland's 2 million-member work force, said its "national day of action" was designed to pressure the government to reduce its budget-cutting plans in favor of running even deeper deficits.
