Admiral Philippe de Gaulle attends, 08 May 2007 at the General de Gaulle statue in Paris, the ceremonies marking the 62nd anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany during World War II. French President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy, a fellow member of Chirac's UMP party but with whom the outgoing president has had a stormy relationship, said he would not attend the ceremony because he did not want "to give the impression of a republic with two heads."
